Hell and High Water

Floods are the most common Natural disaster.  Can you keep your head above the rising water? 

Gone is the heavenly Iowa Lake where water skiers once carved arcs in their wakes and residents sat on decks and watched the boats bob at docks.

 

Just Gone.

 

All that’s left of the 450-acre oasis is a 25-foot wide river in the middle of a forlorn lakebed.

  

WaterWhen the dam on Lake Delhi failed last summer and the water rushed out, it washed away a popular eastern Iowa recreation destination and much of the value of the surrounding 843 homes, which include more than 150 fishing cabins worth less than $50,000, many $200,000-range homes and a few half-million dollar houses. Left behind in the lakebed were beached boats, downed trees and even an upside-down white Pontiac Grand Prix. Homes where residents walked a few steps out to the water now sit at the edge of a sediment-filled expanse.
