Several HOA/condo association learning opportunities are coming up that you may wish to attend, both in North Carolina as well as nationally. Details for each program can be found below.
Asheville – 11/29/17
What You Don’t Know as a Board Member or Manager Could Hurt Your Community Association!
The NC Community Associations Institute will host a “board member essentials” program on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at the Crest Center in Asheville. Since fewer community association legal programs have been held in Western North Carolina, please consider attending. I’m the speaker and will be talking about differences in types of community associations and why that matters, the governing documents you can’t ignore, essential owner obligations, and recently adopted/proposed legislation impacting community associations.
More details can be found at the NC CAI registration page for the event.
Greensboro – 12/14/17
Meetings: You Don’t Get a Dress Rehearsal!
The NC Community Associations Institute will host a community association learning event on Thursday, December 14, 2017, in Greensboro. My law partner Steve Black will be talking about association meetings, whether annual membership or board meetings, in a scenario-based interactive event with live role-playing!
More details can be found at the NC CAI registration page for the event.
2018 National Community Association Law Seminar
The national Community Association Law Seminar is the premiere HOA and condo legal program held each year. The year’s Law Seminar, sponsored by the Community Associations Institute (CAI) and the College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL), is the 39th annual and will be held January 31-February 3 in Palm Springs, CA.
The Law Seminar is mostly attended by attorneys, but it’s not just for attorneys. Participants include community association managers, other industry professionals, and even homeowners who want to learn about HOA/condo law changes and trends. For insurance professionals who advise homeowner and condominium associations, the CIRMS Insurance Masters Program goes beyond the basics of community association insurance.
This year’s program will include the popular case law update, “Panel of Pundits,” and 19 sessions dealing with community association law, including:
- Navigating the Fair Housing Act
- Assistance animals in community associations
- Fiduciary duty in community associations
- Association names and websites
- Strategies for responding to hoarding disorders
- Foreclosure of the superpriority lien and the Takings Clause
- Legislative trends and community associations
- Transgender and gender variance in community associations
- Issues in over-55 community associations
More information and the full schedule can be found at the 2018 Community Association Law Seminar Web site.
