National HOA/Condo Law Seminar to Be Virtual in 2021!

Jim Slaughter

As a past President of the College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL), I try each year to provide details on CAI’s Community Association Law Seminar. The Law Seminar is the premiere HOA and condo legal program held each year. This year’s Law Seminar is the 42nd annual and will be held January 25-29, 2021 through an online format.

Like so many things these days, the Law Seminar will be different. But in some ways the virtual format will be more convenient and flexible. The program will be held several hours each day (rather than three very long days). And there will be no travel costs or time spent away from the office!

While the Law Seminar is mostly attended by attorneys, it’s not limited to attorneys. Other participants include insurance professionals, community association managers, and industry leaders who wish to learn about HOA/condo law trends and practices. For insurance professionals who advise homeowner and condominium associations, the Insurance Masters Program (sponsored by the Community Insurance and Risk Management Specialists (“CIRMS”)) is for experienced insurance professionals and goes beyond the basics of community association insurance to include risk management and legal issues.

This year’s program will include the popular Case Law Update, Panel of Pundits, networking opportunities, and some 20 other sessions dealing with community association law, including:

  • How a Pandemic Changed the Reality of Electronic Meetings
  • Free Speech and Social Justice Issues in Community Associations
  • What’s That Smell? Tackling Nuisance Complaints
  • Trends in Collections: Defending Against Fair Debt Collection Practices Act Lawsuits from Deceitful Debtors
  • Trends in Attorneys’ Fees Awards: How the Law Changed Overnight
  • Community Associations and Harassment Complaints
  • Cybercrime and Community Association Liability

More information and the full schedule can be found at the 2021 Community Association Law Seminar Web site.
